Letter to the
Dr. Rice, Mr. Rumsfeld
and Mr. Powell, on the Middle East peace negotiations and the "Road
Map". Sent 31.3.2003 |
|
Dear Dr. Rice, Mr. Rumsfeld and Mr. Powell, I have noted with some great concern the warnings that in the aftermath of what I sincerely hope will be a successful campaign in Iraq, that pressure will be brought on Israel to make more compromises. I also note the content of Dr. Rice’s discussions with AIPAC. I am fully in favour of every effort being made to get the peace negotiations back on track, but feel that much of the pressure needs to be put on the Palestinians to recognize that their objective of a one State solution with the destruction of Israel is internationally unacceptable. I know it will not have escaped your notice that as in the Gulf War, the Palestinians have decided to throw in their hand very clearly with Iraq. With their attacks on the US and Britian, threats to carry out homicide attacks on British and US targets, and the burning of American and British flags in huge street demonstrations, are they not severely testing your patience and your loyalty to their cause. Everyone wants a peaceful solution in the
Israel/Palestinian conflict, but the very clear conditions of the UN
resolutions and the Oslo Agreement that the Palestinians must cease
violence and guarantee “safe and secure borders” for Israel have to be met
and strongly enforced by the US and Britain. Any message that tells the
Palestinians that America is prepared to accept anything less can only
make matters worse. America and Israel have proved their friendship and
loyalty to each other over many years. Now is not the time to show any
cracks in that friendship. Yours sincerely |
